The 2006 Event

2006 was the year that the ever present John (Cash) McCaul fought his way through to the final. In qualifying for this year’s competition John made it 8 out of 9 appearances in the Champion of Champions. Failing to qualify only once in 2001.

In spite of Leigh Bowling Club being John’s home green and having great success in his league bowling at the venue, he had only managed to win through more than one round on his previous 7 attempts, when he made the quarter finals in 2003. Maybe this was to be John’s year?

He started well seeing off regular back two bowler Ian Inman (16) in the first round. Next to go was Leigh Cricket Club’s David Green (12) before meeting team mate Colin Knight in the semi-final. This was a tough encounter with both players favouring the corners, however John drew on his green knowledge and ran out winner to 15.

John’s opponent in the final was two times winner Frank Naylor. Frank had progressed to the final by beating Nev Sweeney (19) in round one, Billy Rigby (16) in round two and Garth Smith (15) in the semi-final. 2006 was not the year for John to put his name on this prestigious trophy as for a record equalling 3rd time Frank Naylor etched his name in the history books.
