The 2008 Event

2008 brought with it the fruits of Leigh Cricket Club’s youth team. Two qualifiers for this year Tommy Davies (Parks Player of the Season) and Michelle Glover (Atherleigh Ladies Individual) are both products of the hard work that Stan Walmsley when he formed a youth team to bowl in the Parks league in 2003. Further to this Michelle won the 2008 Lancashire County Bowling Association Junior Merit in the first year that females were allowed to compete in it.

The Champion of Champions was not to bring the same success for Michelle going out in the first round to Colin Knight. However Tommy was to have a better day beating John McCaul (14) in round one, Angela Hampson (16) in round two before losing (12) to Cliff Berry in the semi-final.

Garth Smith was to be crowned champion this year with convincing wins in the semi-final (Jimmy Glover 7) and final (Cliff Berry 9). For the first time the winner of the competition was the first qualifier for the following year. Allowing champion the opportunity to defend his title.
